Modern slavery refers to the exploitation of adults and children through actions such as recruitment, transportation, concealment, or receipt for the purpose of abuse or control. In the UK alone, it is believed that more than 130,000 people are currently living in conditions linked to modern slavery. Throughout this course, real-life case studies will be used to provide context and raise awareness.

This is a complex and far-reaching issue that includes forced labour, sexual exploitation, debt bondage, criminal exploitation, and coerced marriage. The course will examine the profiles of individuals most at risk of being trafficked and explore the tactics used to recruit, manipulate, and exploit victims.

We will also look at modern slavery from the victim’s point of view, identifying common warning signs and exploring the kinds of locations that may be used for exploitation. You’ll learn how to recognise potential cases, how to report concerns, and how the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) supports those affected.

In addition, the course will cover the UK government’s role in addressing modern slavery, reviewing current legal frameworks including the Modern Slavery Act 2015. It will outline the duties of businesses—particularly small enterprises—in preventing exploitation in their operations and supply chains. Guidance will be provided on how to take a meaningful anti-slavery stance in the workplace.
